Installing an EV Charger in a Unionville Heritage Home
Unionville's older streets are some of the most characterful in Markham, and the homes behind the facades are often the hardest to wire. An EV charger is still very doable. It just needs a better plan than a standard new-build garage.
The common challenges
- Finished plaster walls. Routing cable means fishing through walls and ceilings carefully instead of opening them up.
- Older service. 100A service, and occasionally older panels, are common. Capacity is the first thing we check, before talking about upgrades.
- Tight panel rooms. Space for a new breaker, or a subpanel, may be limited.
- Heritage designation. If your property is designated and the work touches the exterior, check with the City of Markham heritage staff first. Interior garage-side installs are usually simpler.
How we approach it
- Survey the route from panel to parking spot, looking for the path that minimizes wall damage.
- Check capacity and compare a load calculation, an EVEMS and a panel upgrade honestly.
- File the ESA Notification of Work, install, and book the inspection.
Send us a photo of your open panel and where you park, and we can usually tell you which path fits before visiting. See our Markham installation guide for other neighbourhoods.
